Concept and creation

When developing the character designs, Knuckles was made larger and more muscular to emphasize his forcefulness, his role as the strong guy on the squad and the bruiser he is.[24] [25] His gliding ability was excluded because it did non fit into any of the stories.[26]

The sports tape Knuckles wears is inspired by fighters and American football players and is meant to give him a sense of practical heroism past showing that that he is non vain, which is a trait more fitting for villains, when saving the earth, and to give him a more grounded approach.[24] It is specially worn around his arms to emphasize that his specialty is power.[27] Excluded from Knuckles' blueprint were his boxing gloves because he was needed to prove gestures with his hands and fingers in a Television receiver show.[28]

Advent

Knuckles is a large anthropomorphic echidna (over a head taller than Sonic), with ruby-red fur that covers most of his body, peach peel on his muzzle, a white crescent-shaped patch of fur on his breast, and purple eyes. He has a rather large torso, broad shoulders and thick muscular artillery, making him very peak-heavy, and possesses long, if somewhat thin legs in comparing. He also has seven long dreadlock-like spines around the sides and back of his head and a medium-sized, tri-crooked tail.

For attire, Knuckles wears a pair of red and xanthous shoes, designed with wrap-like markings, that have green cuffs and greyness metal plates on top. He also wears gloves with knuckle-spikes on them[29] and has white sports tape wrapped effectually his hands, the lower half of his arms and legs, and his biceps, making him like to a Muay Thai boxer. He too occasionally wears his Communicator.

In addition to his usual clothes, Knuckles has a number of boosted attires:

  • For high-distance trips, Knuckles has an advanced white spacesuit with cherry-red boots, belt, and arms (the last having spikes to accommodate his knuckle spikes), and a white helmet with an antenna and transparent visor.[30]
  • For underwater missions, Duke has his own high-tech attire which includes a red wetsuit with a white stripe on each side and his face icon on the chest, cherry-red flippers resembling his shoes, and a transparent cerise confront mask attached to an oxygen tank on his back.[31]
  • When he worked at Meh Burger, Knuckles wore the standard Meh uniform, which is a lavender shirt with yellow leafage-markings and a proper name tag on information technology.[23]
  • For common cold weathers, Knuckles wears a thick gray and dark grey down jacket with a hoodie, red mittens with white spikes to accommodate his knuckle-spikes, and gray, white and cerise winter boots.[32]
  • When playing for the Pin Dashers, Knuckles wears a nighttime blue and white-striped bowling shirt with matching bowling shoes. His shirt is likewise emblazoned with the team's logo.[33]
  • When performing with Dude-itude, Knuckles wears a glittery jacket and microphone headset.
  • For soccer matches, Duke has a soccer compatible that includes a white and bluish t-shirt with a blue chest logo shaped similar Sonic'south head, long white socks, and white shoes with blue laces and red soles.[34]
  • On holidays, Knuckles has been known to wear a green and white Santa Hat, white and green-striped socks, and a green shirt with golden buttons, white fur cuffs and rib, and a white crescent mark on the chest.

Personality

Knuckles is described as a "punch-first-and-keep-punching-until-you-need-a-punch-intermission" kind of echidna, and the best solution to a problem for him is to smash information technology to pieces.[ix] He is adamant and strong of character,[35] but tends to be rather cocky and go into trouble.

Knuckles working out.

Knuckles has shown on several occasions to have a huge ego:[36] he clearly thinks of himself every bit his squad'due south leader and virtually capable fellow member,[16] [37] and fancies himself very heroic. Also, as a result of his cocky-pride, Knuckles feels nifty virtually himself all the time.[half dozen] Still, his cocky-admiration makes him exaggerate his own recollection of his accomplishments and endeavors to the point of absurdity, leaving him convinced in his mind that he, for example, has diverse ridiculous superpowers, such every bit flying.[36] [16] [38] [39] Proud of his manliness, Knuckles has a very manlike-orientated attitude which at times makes him sound somewhat archaic.[40] He is likewise very blunt when expressing his opinions, which makes him come off equally insensitive.[41]

Despite his tough-guy personality, Knuckles is a softy on the inside with some noticeable preferences in particular: he loves nature and is very loyal to his friends.[9] [35] He can besides be protective and fifty-fifty gentle as displayed by his dedication to the Fregosi Sapphire and Ms. Tomatopotamus.[22] [42] He comes also off as being somewhat sociable and out-going. Also, later on reevaluating his status as the final of his kind, Knuckles began feeling the kind of loneliness that comes from knowing that yous take no relatives, making him both vulnerable and long for the love only a family unit tin provide. However, he has since come to realize that his friends are his family and that their dearest is simply equally skillful.[11]

Knuckles is the contrary of Sonic: he is stubborn, likes to take his time and is very naive.[43] He is likewise far from intelligent, having admitted himself that he is "as dumb as a stone."[44] Having trouble keeping even the simplest facts on his friends directly or annihilation else for that matter,[45] he is a little deadening on the uptake, especially when it comes to elaborate plans and math issues, as even simplified explanations takes him a long time to procedure.[two] He is besides a fleck goofy at times and easily distracted to the point where he is drawn to things as simple equally shiny objects.[35] [46] Knuckles is not entirely dim-witted, nevertheless, having on a few occasions shown some surprising insight,[34] [1] [12] cunning,[46] witticism,[47] [48] sarcasm,[xv] [49] and fifty-fifty resourcefulness in different situations.[30] [1] [50] Sometimes he can fifty-fifty tell when he is in over his head.[40] [twenty] His simple-minded view on things likewise lets him observe answers to questions that would otherwise misfile more intellectual individuals.[32] Knuckles can also exist quite the charismatic rallier, as he has the grounded and simple (if not selfish) ethics that the common man find very relatable; most noticeably, he was able to convince the villagers of Hedgehog Village to aid Squad Sonic fight an regular army of robots by inspiring them to protect their possessions.[51]

Duke is a little sensitive when information technology comes to his intelligence. While he accepts he is non the smartest, he takes great offense when being chosen stupid and will go to extreme lengths to show otherwise. Also, when Knuckles got his team into trouble with a one-half-baked plan, he sunk into a depression over his imposed stupidity until his friends restored his confidence.[xv] [52]

Noticeably, Knuckles likewise has a habit of saying "not absurd" to others when they do something he disagrees with.

Powers and abilities

Duke punching an asteroid apart.

Described as the "muscle of the team," Knuckles possesses incredible superhuman strength acquired through sheer upper body workouts which lets him destroy virtually annihilation;[43] [53] co-ordinate to Sticks the Badger, his strength exceeds that of his Prime Zone counterpart.[54] With his strength, Knuckles tin can create destructive shockwaves that can transport enemies flying without dissentious the environment, punch through rock and metallic alloys,[48] fold sheets of metal like paper,[49] and even swing the colossal arm of the Big Male child mech effectually without attempt.[52] His arguably greatest feat of strength though, was when he smashed a gigantic asteroid in infinite to pieces with a single punch.[thirty] While Knuckles' strength mainly lies in his arms, however, his legs are powerful likewise, having enough strength to easily overpower the Mega's caterpillar tracks by running on them.[55] To maintain his strength, he regularly goes through intense weight training exercises.

Using the spikes on his hands, Knuckles can climb along walls, across ceilings and calibration slippery surfaces.[56] He is every bit well quite efficient at burrowing, capable of digging through rock and dirt and construct earth barriers at an exceptionally fast rate.[49] [57]

Duke has immense durability, even past normal standards, allowing him to withstand extreme and painful physical punishment. He only got a crash-land from hitting a falling bedrock with his head, got right back up later on jumping into a deep rock ravine and survived getting hit by a falling shooting star, all while indelible strenuous injuries.[58] He also has some skills as a tracker, having successfully located Sonic one time using only smell and taste.[59]

After eating an Evil Cookie infused with Eggman's DNA, Knuckles gained average-level intelligence. However, it dropped dorsum to normal after he got cured.[lx]

Equipment

Knuckles wields a Communicator, a multifunctional and waterproof smartwatch-similar device created by Tails. This device allows Knuckles wide-ranged radio communication between similar devices. It tin can as well generate its own Enerbeam (an energy tether that can latch onto objects or grade a makeshift whip/rope), tell the time, interface with Duke' tech-based equipment for remote operation, and presume other powers. It also comes with its own tracking device.

Duke also has a unique set of wearing apparel referred to as a Luminous Suit which tin can provide him with calorie-free in otherwise calorie-free-deprived environments.[61]

For all-terrain races and miscellaneous activities, Duke has his own monster truck.[3]

Relationships

Team Sonic

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog is ane of Duke' teammates and his closest companion. Despite them beingness complete opposites, Knuckles considers Sonic his friend and is very loyal towards him.[43] [59] He notably fancies himself to be Sonic's best friend (non understanding that this accolade has been reserved for Tails),[62] even though the ii of them are always disagreeing. Knuckles in item thinks of Sonic as scrawny, weak, clumsy and pathetic, and is downright sickened past looking at him. He firmly thinks that he is better than Sonic, frequently viewing him equally his sidekick, and believes that he is always bailing Sonic out of jams.[16] [63] Nonetheless, Duke sees him as a valuable member of their squad.[59] He has trouble discerning him from Tails at times notwithstanding.[45]

Knuckles and Sonic goofing off together.

Deep downwardly, Knuckles and Sonic share a common bond of respect, though it was not always like this: during their mission to finish Lyric, Knuckles was quick to arraign Sonic for the misfortunes he caused, merely was proud of his growth during the venture and eventually made up with him. In fact, Knuckles chose Sonic over the earth during this attempt to protect him. While Duke still does not take kindly to Sonic'south snarky attitude, they are overall the truest of friends, referring to each others every bit "bros."[40] In time, Knuckles has come to realize that Sonic is not just his friend, merely also the family he had been missing for much of his life.[11]

Sonic is one of the few people Knuckles tin really be himself around, as they spent about of their fourth dimension together roughhousing and goofing off with various extreme and often foolish activities.[xl] [64] [65] Their friendship is especially of import to Knuckles, as he did not want to lose Sonic when he was about to go to jail and felt both betrayed and hurt when Sonic chose Eggman over him for Bro-Down Showdown.[40] [59] Also, despite having been forced to set on Sonic more than once, Knuckles is honestly reluctant to fight him in such cases due to their friendship.[61]

Knuckles has a friendly rivalry going on with Sonic and he cannot help competing with him[43] [66] in all sorts of activities. Whereas Duke e'er takes their competitions seriously and asserts his conviction past trash-talking, Sonic commonly retains a cool-headed attitude. Duke utterly resents losing to Sonic (which he frequently does) and will rather blame it on luck than admitting that Sonic is more skilled than him.[58] In instance he does get a victory over Sonic though, Knuckles volition eagerly rub his victory in Sonic's confront every bit much equally he can.[67]

Miles "Tails" Prower

Another 1 of Knuckles' teammates and friends is Miles "Tails" Prower. While Knuckles does not have any real bug about Tails, their relationship is at times difficult due to their contrasting qualities, with Tails being a genius while Knuckles is "every bit dumb as a rock." This often frustrates Tails, which Knuckles hardly notices. Peculiarly, even though he admits that he is non very smart, Knuckles still thinks himself more than capable than Tails; even every bit a novice inventor (and a bad one at that), Duke considered himself a better one than Tails.[68]

Knuckles trying to understand Tails' scientific explanations.

Compared to his other friends, Knuckles is more hands impressed by Tails' more than questionable inventions (though not always for the desired reasons).[15] [68] Yet, he never understands Tails' complex explanations, which makes him wonder if Tails talks like that just to make him feel stupid.[69] He is also very much against having Tails atomic number 82 him and has trouble discerning him from Sonic at times.[45] [seventy] While not mean-spirited, Knuckles besides likes to tease Tails with his quirks.[68] [71]

In spite of their differences, Knuckles values Tails as a precious friend whom he enjoys hanging out with, and they are both loyal and adept-spirited teammates.[68] In fact, Knuckles has realized over time that Tails is not just his friend, merely also the family he had been missing for much of his life.[11] Similarly, Knuckles often has Tails with him and Sonic on their numerous escapades.[40] [64]

Amy Rose

Knuckles and Amy arguing.

Amy Rose is one of Duke' teammates. While the two of them are friends, their relationship is at times strenuous, and they often bicker due to their opposing viewpoints. While Amy is elegant, intelligent and thinks strategically ahead, Knuckles is macho-minded, dimwitted and tackles trouble head-on without thinking.[2] Also, when Sonic is out of the picture they usually argue over who should be in accuse.[72]

Like his other friends, Knuckles clearly thinks he is more capable than Amy and perceives her every bit helpless without his guidance. Even more than and then, he is under the impression that Amy looks upwards to him and is enamored by his manliness.[sixteen] [38] Not happy to exist bossed around by Amy, Duke will obstinately refuse to accept orders from her, fifty-fifty at inconvenient times, nor is he very great on her ideas for grouping activities.[46] [20] [73] At the same time, Knuckles tends to exam Amy's patience with his dimwittedness. While Knuckles ofttimes fails to observe Amy'south criticism of him,[seventy] he does not take kindly to it when he does.[2]

Despite their disputes, Knuckles remains loyal to Amy and always has her back. In fact, Knuckles has come to realize that Amy is non just his friend, but also the family he had been missing for much of his life.[eleven] No thing how much they debate, Knuckles always makes peace with Amy at the end of the solar day every bit they realize their misguided behavior (although Knuckles tends to put more than of the blame on Amy).[52] [70] They as well work well together in gainsay, even having their own maneuvers. Also, while Knuckles may deed inconsiderate towards Amy, he nonetheless appreciates her as both a teammate and a friend, and will try making upwards with her whenever he has upset her.[46] [74] In fact, Duke cannot stand watching Amy cry.[22]

Sticks the Annoy

Duke and Sticks together in battle.

Sticks the Badger is another of Duke' friends and teammates. While Knuckles treats Sticks with support and admits she is really nice deep down, he besides honestly thinks she is a whack-task.[16] [15] Clearly believing himself to be better than Sticks, Knuckles holds the impression that Sticks looks upwards to him and is enamored past him.[38]

Unlike his other friends, Knuckles has, on several occasions, expressed 18-carat belief in Sticks' theories.[58] [75] At the same time, he will also show some skepticism nearly her more outrageous claims, though he volition be remorseful when she proves him incorrect.[76] [77] [78] Regardless, Knuckles is very loyal to Sticks, and has realized over time that she is not just his friend, but also the family he had been missing for much of his life.[xi] In boxing, the two of them have also shown proficient collaboration, even having their own throwing maneuver.[71]

Dr. Eggman

Knuckles near to fight Eggman.

Like the rest of Team Sonic, Duke' sworn enemy is Dr. Eggman, whom he mostly dislikes. Still, their relationship is rather complex. In battle, Knuckles fights Eggman determinately to end his plans and has no qualms about bashing his face in.[49] Outside of that, they keep a passive human relationship where they let each other exist nearby without starting to fight.

Like most of his friends, Knuckles finds Eggman to be a total joke.[4] In spite of their mutual hatred though, Knuckles is known to have tried defecting to Eggman, in one case because he thought the medico would appreciate him, until he realized the error of his ways.[58] Because of his constant victories over him, Knuckles has a tendency to underestimate Eggman and forget how dangerous he tin can be.[49]

Being equally gullible as he is, Duke is easily deceived by Eggman's tricks (more than and so than his other friends); once, the md tricked Knuckles into trapping himself in a pigsty without noticing information technology.[49] Too, while Eggman does not think much of Duke, the echidna believes on the contrary that Eggman fears him.[38] It is likewise his stance that Eggman looks ridiculous with his mustache.[iv]

Mike the Ox

Duke is good friends with Mike the Ox. The two seem to go along rather well, and take met up to hang out or compete together on a few occasions. Duke appears to value Mike a lot, as he opted to encounter a movie with him instead of fighting Eggman. He also got very upset when Sonic insulted Mike.[65] [73]

Charlie

Knuckles fighting Charlie.

Charlie, the erstwhile archaeologist-turned-supervillain, is Knuckles' personal foe, who views the echidna as his curvation-nemesis.[xi] The two of them go dorsum to when Knuckles' foolery cost Charlie his starting time job. Years afterwards, Knuckles tried making up for his past mistakes to Charlie, just to ruin Charlie'south otherwise great life. This pushed Charlie to become a supervillain so he could become revenge on Knuckles. At beginning, Knuckles remained non-confrontational and attempted to fix things between him and Charlie, just somewhen realized he had to stand to Charlie and what he had get, establishing them equally enemies.[1]

Unlike Charlie, who hates Knuckles with a passion, Duke holds hardly any grudge against Charlie. In fact, Duke has been known to barely remember Charlie, and when he does, he talks to him in a friendly and casual manner.[11] [ane] While a part of Charlie's family, Duke would look up to Charlie as a father-figure, but he would regain his former opinion almost him when he realized he was but using him.[eleven]
