How to Edit a Video and Make It Funny

When I'm creating educational content I always try to think of ways on how to edit videos to make them funny. Because we don't want another boring class like in school right?

Several techniques make a video funny, either incorporate memes in strategic areas that complement the scene, add funny sounds to events in the clips, add funny b-rolls over the clips from stock footage, or use humor references in the filmed clips itself.

Using memes to make videos hilarious

This is one of my favorite techniques to use in my videos, and they always crack me up! If you don't know what meme is, here is a quick rundown:

A meme is a funny or satirical picture or a very short video clip that repeats itself (GIF). It spread around from person to person on the internet and gains massive popularity, often through social media, that pictures a funny moment or fad in a genre or theme.

A meme is the most powerful if the viewer can relate to the specific event that the meme is about. The more widespread and popular the even or theme is, the more funny the meme will be. That's why it's important to know your niche and audience when making your videos funny.

One thing I found was that it's easy to overdo it at put memes just everywhere in your videos, which is overkill. Taking it too far will remove the intent, story, or purpose of what you're trying to achieve with the video.

This is especially true for how-to or educational content. But if done right and inserted in a few moments here and there throughout elevates the whole video and makes it more engaging and enjoyable. You'll have to experiment with this, but my number one tip is not to go overboard with memes.

Where to find memes and how to include them in your videos

One of the best places to find memes are on giphy.com; they have everything and anything. Just do a quick search on the site for what you're looking for; let's do the keyword "awesome" as an example;

On the Giphy site, click on the meme you like, like the one above

• Click "media"
• Copy the mp4 URL
• Open the URL in a new tab
• Right-click on the meme and save the video to your computer
• Add it to your video editing program like a regular video file

Add the meme as a b-roll to your videos but don't make it fullscreen as the quality is often in low resolution (as it's supposed to be shareable on social media and needs to be low in size).

Add sound effects to create funny moments in your videos

Another way to elevate your videos without taking it too far is by adding some funny sound effects on key moments in your clips or when perhaps a text pops up that you want to add a specific feel for.

Adding a 1second rubber duck sound effect when presenting or doing something can make or break the whole video and keep the viewer staying for more; this is also something I like to use in my own videos and works well for bigger Youtubers also. It's all about engagement.

Where to find free sound effects

When I wanted to find sound effects for my videos, I had to go through quite a few sites before finding something that had royalty-free sound effects for free. It's important to use everything "royalty-free" to avoid trespassing on someone's copyright or trademark. Otherwise, you run the risk of having your video taken down, or worse, even sued.

A massive library of royalty-free sound effects can be found on freesound.org. The site is a bit of a mess, but the same principle works here as well, do a search for the sound you want, listen to it, download it, and import it to your video editing program.

You will have to edit the sounds in your video editing program to get the specific sound from a longer audio file you like; remember, these should be 1-second clips that you add to a punchy moment.

Use stock media as B-rolls to elevate the storytelling

Adding B-rolls to your videos is almost a must in order to make it appear more professional and elevate the experience, and it's also the same deal with making it funny.

It's the same deal with stock media as with memes, only that stock media is in high quality so you can go full screen on these in your videos and replacing entire scenes if needed.

Where to find stock media

Most larger video editing software has built-in stock media footage that you can add in with the click of a button, making it super easy, but it's also an extra cost and may depend on what plan you use for the software.

Adobe Premiere CC calls this adobe stock, and WeVideo has it included in their professional plan.

Use different types of humor in your storytelling

Filming videos and shots that are funny from the start requires thinking a bit about your storytelling and how you want the video to be before you even start editing.

Here is a list of different types of humors that might spark some ideas for you, and get the creative juices flowing!

• Slapstick humor – The art of making a funny scene by using physical movements in an exaggerated way to amuse the audience. This can include facial expressions, sudden head movements that seem out of the ordinary, reactions, and funny poses.
• Make fun of yourself humor – Most people might not be comfortable with this but it's a widely used technique by stand-up comedians and might make others feel better about themselves.
• Absurd or surreal humor – Something so out of the blue that's just weird, odd, or quirky.
• Improv humor – Just make up something on the spot and let the awkwardness speak volumes, this might not be for everyone.
• PUNS or dad jokes – Just google a few dad jokes and you'll get the hang of it, it's a form of dry humor or a play of words. It can be a hit or miss though.
• Caught in the act kind of humor – Also called observational, just making fun of everyday life with a serious face or expression watching something happen, you heard something or an unexpected event.
